World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development
Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade

The "World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development – Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade" was held in Bonn, Germany, from 31 March to 2 April 2009. Organizers of the conference were UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the German Commission for UNESCO.
Five years into the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, for which UNESCO is the lead agency, the conference aimed to highlight the relevance of ESD to all of education; promote international exchange on ESD, especially between countries of the North and the South; carry out a stock-taking of the implementation of the UN Decade and develop strategies for the way ahead.
Conference participants did not only exchange best practices on Education for Sustainable Development from all world regions but also developed mechanisms for enhanced cooperation regarding the implementation of the UN Decade. A focus was on the exchange between developing countries, those in transition and developed countries.
Furthermore, regional, national and cultural differences as well as challenges in the implementation of the UN Decade were discussed. At the end of the conference, a declaration reflecting the debates and proposing guidelines for the implementation of the UN Decade in its second was adopted.
Participants: Over 700 participants, representing all world regions, took part in the conference. These are representatives of UNESCO Member States, United Nations agencies, multi- and bi-lateral cooperation agencies, organizations from civil society and the private sector.
