Coastal School - ESD on Sea & Coast
Living in harmony with the marine and coastal environment and developing it sustainably - this is the motto of the diverse educational work of the EUCC-Germany.
The health, safety and well-being of people depend to a large extent on the state of our seas and coasts. A greater knowledge of the world‘s oceans as well as an understanding of the different usage requirements is a prerequisite for actively shaping the sustainable development of our blue, planet earth.
Coupling of people and the sea
The aim of the non-profit association EUCC - The Coastal Union Germany e. V. (EUCC-Germany) is to support current and future decision-makers on issues relating to the sustainable development of marine and coastal areas. The provision and dissemination of information and knowledge about coastal and marine processes as well as the dialogue between science, practice and the population play a central role. The variety of topics includes climate change and coastal protection, beach management, water quality and marine litter.
Within the focus of our work on education for the sustainable development of seas and coasts, EUCC-Germany embraces these topics, shows the diverse coupling of people and the sea whilst highlighting the fact that all aspects of sustainability must be taken into account within the design processes. To this end, the association initiates extracurricular educational projects, provides advanced training for teachers and multipliers and provides educational materials for various target groups.
From knowledge to action
The central concern of the EUCC-Germany’s educational work is that children and young people, teachers, (prospective) specialists and decision-makers not only acquire knowledge about unsustainable processes and possible sustainable developments, but that they also relate it to their own consumption patterns and lifestyle and move towards more sustainable behaviour. For each possible behaviour change or action where the (new) awareness can be applied, knowledge, skills and values are conveyed.
Whether it is media competitions, project days and supervised weeks, school trip programs, e-learning offers or loanable educational boxes - all EUCC-Germany educational offers combine complex content with active experience. Sustainable action is brought to life by linking concrete problems to the living environment of all those involved.
Sphere of activity
Supported by its official headquarters in Rostock-Warnemünde, the association is active along the entire North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts of Germany. Since the foundation of the association, EUCC-Germany has contributed to the sustainable development of seas and coasts in over 45 national and international projects, including educational projects in Europe, and has therefore already contributed to the UN Decades of Education for Sustainable Development on a number of occasions.
