ESD Center

The aim of the Heidelberg Center of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD Center) is to implement and support essential changes of mindset and behavior across disciplinary and institutional boundaries in the context of sustainable development.

The aim of the Heidelberg Center of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD Center) is to implement and support essential changes of mindset and behavior across disciplinary and institutional boundaries in the context of sustainable development at the Heidelberg University of Education.

Goals and contents of an education for sustainable development (ESD) are nowadays already integrated in teaching and learning processes of different disciplines throughout the university. It is also subject of undertakings in research and development. The ESD Center further develops the existing range of courses like the ESD lecture series and colloquium and anchors ESD in the cross-study area "ÜSB". Above that, the Center aims to extend the range of educational and research activities related to ESD throughout the institution.

In that way, the supra-regional competence center with its nationwide reputation makes a significant contribution to the implementation of ESD in the initial education of future teachers.

Activities:

  • Seminar "Learning to teach sustainability" in cooperation with the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE) of the Heidelberg University (every semester)
  • ESD lecture series (every semester)
  • ESD colloquium (3 - 4 times per semester)
  • Regulars’ table primarily for university staff (twice per semester)
  • "Future café" primarily for students (several times per semester)
