The ESD campaign puts the numerous actors centre stage who have been committed to ESD for a long time. The aim is to not only promote exchange within the network, but also to add new actors to the network in order to strengthen the structural integration of ESD in all areas of education and to advance the implementation of the National Action Plan on ESD (NAP ESD). Finally, the campaign under the motto 'Learning. Taking action. Shaping the future together. Education for Sustainable Development' is aimed at encouraging as many people as possible to take sustainable action.

The campaign is centred around people from the realm of sustainable action, who deliver their testimonials on what motivates them to take action for a more sustainable world. On the new website bne-jetzt.de, they tell their personal stories and share their motivation and role models. They talk about current and future projects as well as about their hopes for the future and offer helpful tips for how each and every one of us can become more sustainable in everyday life.

The campaign was kicked off with an event in Berlin’s natural history museum on 23 January 2023 under the motto 'We are ESD – Shaping the future together'. The event was attended by 140 invited guests. More than 400 people followed the panel discussion online, while around 200 participants took part in the digital workshops. The following day, visitors had the opportunity to take a tour on which various different ESD actors in Berlin talked about their work. There were three different routes, each visiting three stops.

Under the motto 'We are ESD – Shaping the future together', the kick-off event to launch the campaign 'Learning. Taking action. Shaping the future together. Education for Sustainable Development' was held in Berlin’s natural history museum on 23 January 2023, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The ESD campaign features testimonials by, among others:

• Domitila Barros, Miss Germany 2022, green influencer and coach, who runs her own sustainable jewellery brand and who, already at a young age, taught children and adolescents to read and write.
• Jacob Beautemps, science YouTuber and influencer, who looks at current issues from a scientific point of view, using plain language.
• Marisa Becker, journalist and content creator, who focuses on issues concerning climate action, sustainability, and consumer protection.
• Robin Blase, YouTuber, podcaster, actor and moderator, who initiated a major donation campaign with his Twitch livestream 'Loot für die Welt' (loot for the world).
• Claudia Brück, Managing Director at Fairtrade Germany, who champions fair trade to support disadvantaged family producers in Africa, Asia and Latin America and to empower them to take more control over their living and working conditions.
• Ralph Caspers, TV presenter (for example "The Mouse", "Quarks") and author, who is also an ambassador for the UN Decade on Biodiversity and was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his commitment to education in 2019. He is also a member of the jury for the National ESD Award.
• Ralf Elsässer, owner of CivixX, a civil society agency, which provides solutions to local and regional challenges in the German state of Saxony, while also bringing together committed civil society stakeholders.
• Tatjana Franz, green influencer, who runs an online shop for regional sustainable household products.
• Rebecca Freitag, former UN Youth Delegate, who supports companies in developing a sustainable business model.
• Dr Julia Kleeberger, co-founder of Junge Tüftler*innen, an educational startup firm that empowers children and adolescents to use digital tools to shape the world and find sustainable solutions.
• Susanne Metz, head of the municipal libraries of Leipzig, who creates low-threshold educational offers to engage all people in ESD.
• Holger Nikelis, player in the German national para table tennis team, who works towards increasing sustainability in sports.
• Dr Michael Pahle, head of the working group "Climate and Energy Policy" at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, who advises the German government as well as the European Commission and Parliament on issues related to the transformation of the energy system.
• Dr Katharina Reuter, managing director of the BNW sustainable business association, who is committed to responsible business, environment and society.
• Anja Rosswinkel, coordinator of the ‘Foyer for encounters’ project at the municipal library of Greifswald, who provides a space for cross-generational dialogue and encounters.
• Natalie Sadik, school development planner and education manager, who has been implementing the 'Shaping school together' programme in the Saarlouis district since 2010.
• Peter Sänger, co-founder of Green City Solutions, who is committed to ensuring a healthier future in urban areas.
• Marina and Michael Schmidt, founders of Ozeankind e.V., who fight for the protection of the environment and oceans and against plastic pollution in clean-up projects.
• Professor Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, who is also Vice-President for transfer, sustainability, gender equality and diversity of the German Rectors’ Conference.
• Janine Steeger, former TV presenter, who now works as author, journalist and speaker on the topics of sustainability and gender equality.
• Ina Streichert, who has been working in the field of sustainable development for the town of Norderstedt for over 20 years.
• Kristina Wetzel, head of the Agenda unit at the Office of Environmental Protection, Trade Supervision and Energy of Heidelberg, who coordinates the implementation of ESD and the 2030 Agenda at the municipal level.
